INTENT
At Culverstone Green Primary School, we teach PSHE through the PSHE Association programme.
We recognise PSHE as an integral part of children’s learning and endeavor to ensure children share this viewpoint. We aim to give continuum through lessons that are progressive from EYFS through to Y6, building on
previous learning in PSHE lessons and ensuring content is delivered in an age-appropriate way. Our PSHE curriculum is a Trust wide approach using the PSHE Association.
This is designed to support pupils to be healthy, safe and prepared for modern life. PSHE education incorporates health education, relationships education/RSE and economic wellbeing and careers.
IMPLEMENTATION
Weekly PSHE lessons ensure that the PSHE curriculum is covered in full each year and that children are revisiting key messages often. The ‘little and
often’ approach means PSHE becomes a part of the everyday classroom.
We encourage open discussions within classes to enable children and staff to develop an understanding of each other and create safe spaces to discuss
tricky topics. These are regularly planned, but also impromptu if ‘something’ comes up e.g. an upset at home, classroom or playground, or an event being
publicised in the media.
We aim to deliver RSE lessons that are age appropriate and relevant to the
community and world we live in. We want children to have the knowledge and skills they require to be successful in their next stages of education and
life. Our RSE offer is based on the PSHE Association and agreed at Trust level.
At Culverstone our curriculum is cross-curricular, and this includes PSHE. We want children to see links within their learning and also see how what they learn in the classroom connects to the wider world. We choose our English texts carefully to ensure PSHE topics are interwoven into every term.
This creates space for discussions on international, national and local issues of
importance to be discussed.
In addition to our classroom curriculum, we have assemblies (which focus on safeguarding themes and British Values) and also arrange workshops for year group to take part in throughout their time at Culverstone. For example,
road safety, Online Safety related talks (Breck Foundation), secondary
transition workshops (Youth Unity) and talk with local PCSOs. We are currently reviewing our wider curriculum offer.
Our approach to Online Safety is both proactive and reactive. Our Proactive Curriculum is based on the KAPOW Computing Curriculum. We have adapted this scheme. Every year group receives Online Safety specific lessons each term and are progressive across the school.
When Online Safety incidents occur, we react by following up with structured conversations with individuals and/or classes/year groups.
The PSHE Curriculum is supported by our whole school values of Equality, Respect, Courage, Awareness, Collaboration and Resilience which are embedded in all aspects of school life. Events such as Harvest festival, Food
BBQ events and other community events recognise that Culverstone Green have these values at our core.
