You do not need to work in education to become a Governor. In fact, having Governors from different backgrounds, professions and walks of life makes our governance stronger.

What does a Governor actually do?
Governors work alongside school leaders to provide both support and constructive challenge. They do not manage the day-to-day running of the school; instead, they help ensure that the school is delivering the best possible outcomes for its pupils.
At school, our Governors:
- get to know the school, its pupils and its priorities;
- monitor areas such as education, safeguarding, attendance, SEND and inclusion;
- visit the school and talk to leaders, staff colleagues and pupils;
- ask questions and provide constructive challenge;
- contribute their own knowledge, skills and experience; and
- help ensure that the school remains focused on providing the best possible education for every child.

You do not need previous governance experience and you don’t need to be an education expert.
What matters most is curiosity, commitment and a willingness to ask questions and learn.
Governors receive induction, training and ongoing support so you will have plenty of help as you develop in the role.
