Intent
At Culverstone Green, we believe that Physical Education (PE) plays a vital role in promoting active lifestyles, developing physical competence, and supporting the mental and social wellbeing of our pupils. Through the Complete PE scheme of work, we aim to provide an inclusive, engaging, and progressive PE curriculum that inspires all children to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically demanding activities.
Our intent is to:
Develop children’s competence and confidence to excel in a broad range of physical activities.
Promote lifelong participation in physical activity through positive experiences.
Teach pupils to understand the importance of physical health and fitness and how it contributes to overall wellbeing.
Instil values such as fairness, respect, resilience, teamwork, and leadership through sport and physical activity.
Ensure that every child can achieve and enjoy PE, regardless of ability or background.
Through the Complete PE scheme, pupils gain access to a carefully sequenced curriculum that builds physical literacy while also supporting social and emotional development. We aim to equip children with the knowledge and understanding they need to make informed choices about healthy, active lifestyles.
Implementation
We follow the Complete PE scheme of work, which provides a broad and balanced PE curriculum that meets the requirements of the National Curriculum. The scheme ensures a clear progression of knowledge, skills and understanding across a wide range of physical activities, including:
Games (invasion, net/wall, striking and fielding)
Dance
Gymnastics
Athletics
Outdoor and Adventurous Activities (OAA)
Swimming (in KS2)
Each unit is carefully designed with progressive learning objectives, key vocabulary, success criteria and assessment tools. Teachers use these to plan inclusive, high-quality PE lessons that build upon prior learning, ensure challenge and develop pupils’ physical, social and emotional skills.
Key features of our implementation:
A spiral curriculum where knowledge and skills are revisited and deepened over time.
Lessons that are inclusive and adaptable, allowing all pupils to succeed.
A strong focus on developing fundamental movement skills in EYFS and KS1 that form the foundation for more complex skills in KS2.
Opportunities for pupils to evaluate and improve their performance using clear success criteria.
A clear focus on personal development, including communication, collaboration, leadership, resilience and reflection.
In addition to curriculum PE, pupils benefit from:
Extra-curricular sports clubs
Participation in inter- and intra-school competitions
House events and sports days
Targeted interventions for less active pupils
Links with local clubs and external coaches
All teachers are supported through CPD opportunities provided by the scheme, ensuring high-quality delivery across the school.
Impact
The impact of our PE curriculum is evident in the positive attitudes of our pupils towards physical activity, their growing confidence and competence in a range of sports and their ability to apply values such as resilience, teamwork, and respect in both PE lessons and wider school life.
As a result of our PE provision, children at Culverstone Green:
Lead healthy, active lives and understand the physical and mental benefits of regular exercise.
Demonstrate progress in physical competence and performance across a wide range of activities.
Set themselves personal goals and reflect on their performance to improve.
Work cooperatively with others, showing sportsmanship and respect.
Enjoy participating in physical activity and are motivated to engage beyond the classroom.
We assess the impact through:
Teacher assessment using the Complete PE assessment tools at the end of each unit
Pupil voice surveys and reflections
Participation rates in clubs and competitions
Observations and lesson visits
Photographic and video evidence of physical engagement and achievement
Progress tracking in swimming and other key areas of the curriculum
At Culverstone Green, we are committed to ensuring all children leave primary school with the skills, knowledge and motivation to lead active and healthy lives, now and in the future.
